How to Add Related Products to Product Page: A Shopify Tutorial

A Step-by-Step Guide on Adding Product Recommendations

You can customize product recommendations in some themes easily since they have this option by default. Such themes include Brooklyn, Debut, Boundless, Narrative, Minimal, Venture, and Simple.

But take note that doing so needs some bit of code, so be careful before you proceed. If you’re not comfortable using code, you may want to hire a Shopify expert to do the following tutorial on your behalf:

Step 1

Go to the ‘Online Store’ section of your dashboard. It is located at the left lower panel. Under it, click ‘Themes,’ then select ‘Edit Code’ from the Actions drop-down menu.

Step 2

You’ll be redirected to the next screen. Go to the ‘Templates’ section, then click on ‘product.liquid.’ This will show the code you need to edit.

Step 3

Look for the code {% section ‘product-template’ %}. You can either search for it using the CTRL + F feature or just locate it near the top of the page.

Paste the code {% section ‘related-products’ %} underneath and click ‘Save.’

Step 4

After this, you need to make a section for the code you have enabled.

Go to the ‘Sections’ area and select ‘Add a New Section.’

Step 5

Type in the term ‘related-products‘ to the text box that pops up, then click ‘Create Section.’

Step 6

After creating this section, you will see a new tab named ‘related-products.liquid.‘ Delete the code here and paste the appropriate one according to your Shopify theme.

Some additional code changes may still be necessary, so make sure to consult your web developer for any recommendations.

Doing this will only showcase products that belong in the same collection. For example, if the user is browsing through skirts, then she will only see skirt recommendations.

If you want your clients to see products from other categories, you will need to use apps such as Relatify.

Other Limitations

Apart from the product category, your Shopify plan and online store determine the limitations of shop recommendations.

For example, you can activate recommendations according to the product description and purchase history if you have a Plus plan with more than 7,000 listed products and an English storefront.

Meanwhile, only the Purchase history is available for Plus plan users with non-English storefronts containing more than 7,000 products. The same option is available for non-plus users with less than 7,000 listed items.

The Collection page is visible with any plan with more than 7,000 products published.

The Recommendations algorithm doesn’t include gift cards or out-of-stock products. While you can’t exclude specific products for product recommendations, there is an option to write a JavaScript code for such details.

Best Practices for Product Recommendations

To make the most out of the revenue-generating capacity of product recommendations, it’s best if you follow these tips:

  • As mentioned, make use of phrases such as “You may like” for your product recommendations.
  • Use the right image size for your product card.
  • Shopify’s algorithm makes up to then recommendations per product. This is classified according to relevance, with the first product being more related than the tenth one. That said, it’s best if you only showed four products per page. That way, your customers will only see the best-related items while they are shopping.
